When first meeting this gentlemen back in 2007/ 08 I could tell he was a man of good taste, style, and character but he also has something to say. With an unmistakable New York swagger this man of many talents CurT@!n$ is one of todays front-runners in hip hops “generation next” freshmen class. Constantly on the move some how I snagged a chance to pick the brain of the man behind the CurT@!n$.
How do you feel your music differs from other young hip hop artist of today?
C$ Hmmm… I think in the grand scheme of things I blend the past and future into one sound. My aggressive approach and my voice set me apart also. My personality shines through the track a lot brighter than most.
What inspires some of the subject matter within music?
C$ My subject matter comes from a place of reflection. I look around my environment and that gives me the fuel to write music. Most of my songs stem from personal and/or 2nd hand experiences. Even the shit talking “flossy” songs have some deeper meaning. Man I’m just inspired by life in general.
Describe your typical fan?
C$ My typical fan is an individual who cannot and refuses to be boxed in. My fan is blind to all stereotypes placed upon society. My fan has a free mind and is open and ready to bring about change.
Are you interested in working with other artist outside the hip hop & R&B genres?
C$ Yes most definitely I’m interested in working with artists from many genres. I’m into the indie rock sound, pop, reggae, rock, alternative. I’m a music lover so I def want to branch out and blend sounds to create something magical.
If you got the opportunity to change one thing within/or about the music industry what would it by? and why?
C$ I would change the concept of ownership. When artist get record deals they usually walk away with little to no ownership of their music. After advances stop, an artists stream of money becomes very slim. A song has no lifeline, but an artists revenue does. There should be mandatory clauses in contracts where artists walk away with reasonable portions of their catalogs. I would also make It mandatory for health benefits to be incorporated into artists deals. Artist work for record companies the way a bus driver works for the city, health is an important issue that is not covered by these record companies to help artists in time of need.
Stick around guys I’ll be posting part two of this interview within the month……some exciting things to come!
